Heat pumps & funding in Scotland

Heat pumps and heat pump funding in Scotland

Find out whether an air source heat pump suits your home, what Home Energy Scotland funding you could be offered, and get introduced to an experienced MCS-certified installer.

Is a heat pump right for your home?

An air source heat pump takes heat from the outside air, even on cold Scottish winter days, and uses it to warm your radiators or underfloor heating and provide hot water. Because it moves heat rather than burning fuel, a well-designed system can deliver several units of heat for every unit of electricity it uses.

Heat pumps can replace mains gas, oil, LPG or electric heating, and are a particularly strong option for off-gas homes. Whether one suits you depends on your property, insulation, existing radiators and how you use heat. With 20 years of heating experience behind us, we help you understand all of that before anyone quotes.

Why Scottish homeowners are switching to heat pumps

Low-carbon heating is no longer a niche choice. For many households it is the most practical long-term replacement for an ageing boiler.

Lower-carbon heating

Heat pumps produce no emissions at your home and get cleaner as more of the grid runs on renewable power.

Steady, comfortable warmth

Designed properly, a heat pump runs gently for longer, keeping rooms at an even temperature.

No more oil or LPG deliveries

Off-gas homes can stop relying on fuel deliveries, storage tanks and volatile fuel prices.

Works well with solar and batteries

Pair a heat pump with solar PV and battery storage to use more of your own electricity.

Hot water included

A heat pump system heats your hot water cylinder as well as your home.

Generous funding in Scotland

Grants and interest-free loans from Home Energy Scotland can reduce the upfront cost for eligible homeowners.

Heat pump questions

Common questions from homeowners considering a heat pump in Scotland.

Costs vary with the size of your home, the heat pump needed and any radiator or cylinder upgrades. Your installer partner will give you a detailed quote after a survey, and grants and loans may reduce what you pay upfront.

Yes. Modern air source heat pumps are designed to keep working well below freezing. The key is a system correctly sized for your home’s heat loss, which is why a proper survey matters.

Sometimes. Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures than most boilers, so some rooms may need larger radiators. Your installer will assess this room by room during the heat loss survey.

Homes in eligible remote, rural and island areas may qualify for a rural uplift on the Home Energy Scotland heat pump grant. We can help you understand whether this could apply to you.

Most air source heat pump installations take a few days once the survey, design and any funding approvals are complete. Your installer will confirm the timescale for your home.
